Sad Endings, New Beginnings

For almost six years, since I returned from an amazing backpacking trip to Europe that I took after graduating college, I have talked a good game of throwing caution to the wind, quitting my job, leaving things behind, and going to explore the world again. Those were all fantasies. Really. Deep down inside I think I knew that I wouldn't do something so rash - no matter how confident and matter of fact I may have sounded at the time when I went off on a rant about how short life is, and how one day it won't be so easy to go off and visit all the places in the world I wanted to see.

But things change. And sometimes, it happens faster than you ever imagined it would.

One day about six months ago, while talking with my wife about a honeymoon we kept on putting off, everything I had said in the past hit home. Over the next several days, my wife and I built up the resolve to do something that honestly scared the crap out of us: to quit a very good paying job at a company I had spent the last four years with, during a time when it may not be so easy to find a comparable job, and go to a part of the world that would be so completely foreign to us, where the insects honestly want to kill you, and would take over a day to get to.

And now, in just a few days, my wife and I are dust'n off the old backpacks, and heading to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam for six or seven weeks. During that time, I will record my adventures here from abroad.

After telling so many people in the past week or so about our intended itinerary, it doesn't seem so daunting. It will be interesting to see how this itinerary changes as we travel...

July 26 - Leave Bangkok for Koh Samui at 9am. Arrive Koh Samui and most likely sleep.

July 27 - July 28 - Wake up. Eat. Go back to sleep. Wake up. Curse the heat. Curse the rain. Then go back to sleep. Repeat.

July 29 - Aug. 1 - Honeymoon officially begins on the beaches of Koh Samui.

Aug. 2 - Aug. 8 - Bangkok.

Aug. 9 - Aug. 15 - Chiang Mai.
