The beauty of open source

So I was "de-spamming" my trackback pings today and I ran across a gentleman who had installed BookQueueToo, but did not feel that it met his requirements, so he did what I wish more people would do: he started to modify it. Now he has implemented some of the features I was hoping to implement at some some point. However he says,
"I hope eventually to release my modified version of BookQueueToo, hopefully with the support of the original author(s), however I canít do so at the moment because they would laugh at my added code. Due to my long sabbatical from Perl, my code here is a bit inefficient, to say the least."
I would say to him, "are you kidding!? What you have done is great! Let me at it!"

I was wondering, as BookQueueToo is released under GPL would one be able to use BQT's code but completely modify it so that it does something else completely...

After this, are we allowed to take credit for this new package completely (perhaps with a comment here and there that it was originally BQT's code)

Sorry for the question, I'm a little fuzzy about these terms...

Note from Byrne: Good question. I think everyone should take the time to read the GPL, it is incredibly interesting as many people will criticize the license as it is deemed to restrictive. First, understand that the GPL is intended to be license that governs the distribution of the program, not necessarily whether or not you are allowed to modify it. So if you take the source code, modify it, and then redistribute it, then you are under an obligation to redistribute the new code under the GPL as well.

That being said, you can look at the code, learn from it, and create a program based upon it. Then you are fine IMHO. Use cut and paste sparingly.

Out of curiousity, what are you wanting to do, or what aspects of BQT do you want to "borrow?" I have been meaning to abstract out my changes and distribute them under a different license - specifically: I want to create a plugin template for MT developers.

I've sent you an email about this subject just so that I can clearly understand :)
