It is hard to believe that the Tianamen Square Massacre happened almost twenty years ago. I remember seeing the images on television when I was eleven, and I remember being cogniscent of the significance of what was happening, but I really didn’t understand what I was seeing, nor did I have any kind of mature perspective on the events.

But I would like to thank Frontline for their incredible coverage of the approaching anniversary. Until I saw The Tank Man did I fully realize how much I didn’t know or remember about those events twenty years ago.

A portion of the documentary is based solely on that: what did happen to Tank Man. Some theorize that he was executed by police. But people also believe that at the time, the police would have made a lot of hoopla if they did (considering they were airing public executions of other dissidents at the time). Some think he was smuggled out of the country, but if he was out of harms way, why didn't he come forward. The other possibility of course is that he is still alive in China, living in safe anonymity.

Who knows?
