Sidebar Manager and Movable Type 3.3

In case you have not heard, Movable Type 3.3 Beta 1 and 2 were released in the last week. This is great news for Sidebar Manager, because with the release of Beta 2 Sidebar Manager has been integrated into the core of MT. Much credit goes to Jay who took my horribly hackish code, cleaned it up, added support for dynamic publishing, got it checked into the MT code repository on code.sixapart.com, and all the rest. Brad too deserves some props for his added assistance, and for promising to add an “add widget” callback that would allow plugin authors to register their widgets with the Widget Manager framework so that they can be added to new blogs automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you change the name?

We felt that “Widget Manager” better captured the essence of the plugin because the term “widget” has by now entered the web vernacular and thus was a more self-descriptive name for the plugin. But we also wanted to differentiate it from Sidebar Manager so that people were clear that in many respects (aside from the functionality they provide) they are different plugins.

Does Widget Manager replace Sidebar Manager, or is it an upgrade?

Yes. <wink> If you install Movable Type 3.3 you are encouraged to remove Sidebar Manager because the new and improved Widget Manager replaces all of its functionality and comes bundled with MT.

But don’t worry, because Widget Manager is 100% backwards compatible, your current blog will not break because you “upgraded” to Widget Manager.

Is Widget Manager backwards compatible with Sidebar Manager?

Yes. If you remove Sidebar Manager, all your templates will continue to work as-is. If you ever experience a problem upgrading, then you found a bug and you should report it.

What happens to Sidebar Manager? Is it dead?

Sidebar Manager will no longer be developed or supported. All users are encouraged to upgrade to Movable Type 3.3 and use Widget Manager which comes bundled with MT 3.3 and above.

What will happen to this website? What is next for Widget Manager?

Yes and no. This website will continue to serve Sidebar Manager users using Movable Type 3.2, although all users are encouraged to upgrade to MT 3.3. And this website will in the not too distant future be the homepage for Widget Manager.

I am also working with an excellent designer from the Movable Type community on a new design that will contain a robust Widget Directory that will catalog widgets compatible with Sidebar and Widget Manager.

Actually, as far as I know, WidgetManager does not recognize SidebarManager's template modules and hence your templates would break because of the "missing" includes. However, fixing that problem is as easy as replacing the "Sidebar:" in each template modules name with "Widget:"

Please ignore everything I just wrote. Upgrade from SidebarManager should be seamless.

Apparently I'm better than I thought I was.
