Welcome to WalkerWatch

Two months ago I learned that two of my most favorite people, and two people that for a long time have been advocates and leaders in our neighborhood and block, would be moving. Not far, but far enough. They approached me to act as Captain of the Neighborhood Watch association. I agreed. Can you guess what the first thing I did was? Why register a domain name and setup a blog for the neighborhood. Of course.

Walker Avenue

There I let neighbors know what is going on in the neighborhood. I alert them to crime in the area, and help rally them to support various causes.

This week's cause? 484 Cheney. A house that is a blight on the neighborhood, with an owner that has shown contempt for his neighbors and the City of Oakland.

Wow, that's quite a set of pictures you have. What may I ask is the approximate value of that home, as it would be quite nice if fixed up?! Does anyone actually live there day-to-day?

Sadly - no. The house is empty. It has 3 stories, 5200 square feet of house, and 12 bedrooms. Its crazy big. All the original craftsman woodwork was gutted, which is the biggest tragedy.

The house, in a renovated state is probably worth one million plus. It is across the street from a KFC and the Grand Lake Theater, but the neighborhood is at a tipping point. Trader Joe's is moving in a block away, the Splash Pad Farmer's Market is second to none. It is an amazing neighborhood - which is why it would fetch at least $1M.

I walk by that house everyday, and it saddens me to think what a total and complete waste it is to lose it. It will probably be torn down eventually and replaced with a horribly uncharacteristic house for the street.
