For those that don't know me, I love to teach. Some may say I love to hear the sound of my own voice, which is also true, but I genuinely love to teach. To scratch that itch, I often teach classes at UC Berkeley Extension in Perl Programming. In the eight or so years I have been teaching I have taught classes on "Introduction to Perl Programming," "Web Services Programming using Perl" and most recently (again) "Intermediate Perl Programming."

Over the course of several years teaching these topics I have developed a pretty reliable set of presentations that service as a template for my courses. Each class is about 3 hours long and I try to schedule 45-60 minutes of lab time per class. I am making these presentations available under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License in the hope that others may find this content useful and be inspired to contribute back changes and recommendations.

Of course I am also making these presentations available to my students so that they can have access to the materials I presented in class. Also for them, are my code samples from class, although I doubt they would be useful to anyone but my students.

How did you end up teaching? Did you approach the school or did they find you?

I actually approached the school with my class idea. I imagine any continuing education program like Berkeley's and UCLA's is hungry for teachers. For them it costs nothing to advertise a class in a catalog, so if you have an idea for a class, write up a simple course catalog description and send it in. They will almost certainly list it. And if there is not sufficient interest, then no harm done.

Case and point: the class next to mine was: Fundamentals of Wine Studies I: Wines of California and Europe. I ran into the instructor for the class hauling a crate of empty wine bottles... now that is a fun lab.
