My wife and I have been talking for several years about getting some chickens. I never really took the idea seriously until now, when I saw the Eglu. I love it, you can order these prefabricated chicken coops of various sizes (also good for rabbits). They are easy to keep clean, they are portable, they are extensible. What's not to love? For those also in need of the chickens, you can purchase your chickens when you purchase your coop.

Seth, Chickens really aren't noisy. Not near the trouble of a yappy dog. They get happy when they lay eggs and like to share the good news, but they don't make a lot of noise. Roosters on the other hand could present a problem. There is actually no need for a rooster unless one plans to hatch eggs.

If you ever get a few of your own chickens, you'll be addicted. They are warm and charming creatures who will love you, provide fantastic fertilizer for your garden and leave you wonderful edible gifts every day which are not full of chemicals or cruelty.

If you are interested, there are lots of sites to help you learn how to care for pet chickens. I have 10 hens and live in a large city. My neighbors love eggs. In fact, I can't get enough eggs for the demand.

First one comes to mind is
http://www.backyardchickens.com/ and another wonderful place is

@KC: Good point about the noise level. I was thinking of roosters. In particular the one that lived next to my father for awhile (GRR! Still hate that thing for waking me up so early on weekends).

I'm in an apartment right now so I don't think chickens are in my future but I see your point too about addiction. My kid did looovvee the chickens at the petting zoo today. Chickens are for when I win that lottery and buy that farm in Beverly Hills.

Thanks for setting me straight.

You could spend the same money on a cheap shed, some timber and strong mesh (not chicken wire, it's not predator proof) and provide them with several times the space. These things might look pretty but it's happy chickens that count.
