Data Porn: Trends in the Economy and Technology

Mary Meeker of Morgan Stanley gives an amazing 10 minute talk on the trends we are seeing in the economy, Internet and technology. She draws few conclusions, and let's the amazing amount of data she presents speak for itself.

For me, and perhaps for other technologists, the key take-aways were:

  • there is a lot of data to give you heart burn, and surprisingly, some that offsets the fear you may have that the bottom is about to drop out from under you.
  • job security will be found at companies with a strong mobile strategy.
  • the distribution of Linux based phones in every country other than the US is surprising, not to mention the iPhone's market share in the US.
  • companies with a diversified revenue stream, and offers products of value will do well in this downturn, as they always seem to do.

At the end however, I was left feeling disappointed that Mary Meeker did not talk more about the trends in employment in the technology sector, and over joyed at the fact that I don't work for a company that requires me to have 3 slides of disclaimers at the end of all of my presentations.

Not sure if I agree but I need to do some research on my own. Well written article for sure though.

Barron said much has changed since then because Alabama's unemployment rate has risen from 9 percent in March to 10.9 percent in October, and three vacant seats in the Senate have been filled by special elections.
