I just learned that a part of the economic recovery plan that Obama is set to sign into law on President's Day includes a COBRA subsidy for those who have gotten laid off during this recession.

The legislation would provide a 65 percent subsidy for COBRA continuation premiums for up to 12 months for workers who lose their jobs. To qualify for premium assistance, a worker must be involuntarily terminated between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009

This couldn't come at a better time for me. Our monthly COBRA costs are around $1200 for Arin, Harper and me. That is pretty steep. Normally I would switch to a new, less expensive plan, but there is a little, teeny-tiny snag: Arin is pregnant with our second child, which means we can't switch providers because, believe it or not, pregnancy is considered a "pre-existing condition" and is typically not covered by insurance.

So we are stuck with our current provider. But at least I will be paying only $420 per month as opposed to $1200, which actually seems like a good deal. cough.

As of now Pres. Obama still in his way of making the US economy back to its stability. But did you know that banks charges, for late fees, overdrafts, ATM fees, and the like, is going up? And this so just happen after banks receives bailouts. It is a bit abrupt that we, the customers as well as the taxpayers, just gave them more installments loans from our taxes. I don’t think they really helping us when in fact this is the time they must be are umbrella in “rainy days”. It seems like they had better put that bailout money to use so that those of us who paid the taxes to bail them out don't have to get installment loans for charges for using the services of these banks. We should take our chances to protest and deliver "Bailout Blowback" to our elected officials who supported this legislation. Because in the end we are the one who will be truly benefited by this protest.
