A good, personal and courageous friend from my childhood, Paul Woodall, who has struggled his whole life with a neuro-muscular disease called Freidreich's Ataxia, has put together a short video explaining in his own words why he supports Health Care Reform. In his words:

Since I was born with Freidreich's Ataxia, I would not be a prime candidate for health care insurance. Fortunately the majority of my medical expenses are covered through Medicaid -- a government run health care program. (emphasis mine)

His remarks highlight for me that the vast majority of people who are against a "public option," those who fear a government run health care system, almost certainly have no experience on which to base their opinion. They simply are afraid. Afraid of what they don't know and don't understand.

Perhaps more Americans should listen to people like Paul, who actually have been the recipient of a government run health care system and who can attest more authoritatively through personal experience that people's fears are unfounded. As he says, "I have good doctors, I see good specialists, and I have great help with prescription medication and other medical expenses." And isn't that what this is all about?

Unfortunately, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are all going broke.

If Medicaid is working so well, then why not fold health care for the uninsured into an existing program instead of a whole new bureaucracy?

And if all we want is reform, why not repeal the laws that prevent insurance companies from selling policies across state lines?

This is all about gaining power, not "reforming" anything.

If want reform we should move to a single payer system. Now that's reform. Removing restrictions around from what state you are permitted to buy insurance doesn't change anything with regards to the quality of service one would receive since the insurance industry is an oligarchy anyways.

"Gaining power" - please. Its about redistributing power held by a few corporations back to the free market and the public.
