About Comment Feeds

“Feeds are meant to be consumed by machines, so why must humans be forced to understand the syntax of XML?”

RSS brought to the mainstream the idea that third party tools could subscribe to a news feed of a web site. Those feeds are now consumed by email clients like Outlook and Thunderbird to make reading websites as simple as reading email. Those feeds are consumed by other websites to aggregate content from all over the Internet and present that information to their readers. Feeds are now used to allow systems to subscribe to virtually anything of interest to them.

In the blogosphere feeds have traditionally only been generated for the post content being produced for the blog. But those feeds don’t contain a majority of the content created on blogs: content that comes in the form of comments. So what happens if a user wants to subscribe to a particular conversation that is taking place on a blog as opposed to a list of the conversations taking place? Enter: “comment feeds.” Comment feeds are feeds that contain a list of all the comments associated with a post and allow users to stay up to date with a particular conversation taking place on the blog.

Feeds though are meant to be consumed by machines, so why must humans be forced to understand the syntax of XML, RSS, Atom and all of the other standards in the world of content syndication in order to allow their users to subscribe to this content?

They don’t. Feed Manager provides content producers the ability to generate comment feeds without the need to understand or edit XML files or templates.
